How Important Is Mapping Policy The South Carolina...

Introduction How important is mapping policy to an agency? Our text states, policy governs the relationship among agency staff members, provide order and direction. Policy can help to develop a plan of action to address a social issue such as mental illness. As a mental health counselor, I chose to policy map the South Carolina Department of Mental Health (SCDMH). I will examine this agency and its policies, including its social agency history, mission, money stream, purpose, budget, overall purpose, and effectiveness. My mission is to create a policy map that explains the agency’s purpose, how it operates, and whom it serves. Mission Statement: The South Carolina Department of Mental Health Services serves adults, children and families who suffer from mental health illness and emotional disorders. â€Å"The department has a commitment to eliminating stigma and promoting the philosophy of recovery, to achieving our goals in collaborating with stakeholders, and to assuring the highest quality of culturally competent service possible†. One of SCDMH’s goals is not to have individuals leave their support system in order to receive treatment and allow them to continue leisure pursuits such as employment and education. SCDMH believes that people are best served in or near their own communities because they don’t lose community connections such as family and friends.
